Celebrating Founders Day in 2023

After being unable to celebrate Founders Day for the past few years due to COVID-19 restrictions, we’re pleased to be returning to our traditional celebrations!

Founders Day is celebrated on 22 February, as this is the date that Scouting Founder, Lord Robert Baden-Powell was born! He was born on 22 February 1857 in Nyeri, Kenya. Coincidentally, he shared a birthday with his wife Lady Olave Baden-Powell, who was born on the same day in 1889. She held the title of World Chief Guide for many years, and was instrumental in the running of the Girl Guides, which was formed by Lord Baden-Powell’s sister, Agnes in 1910.

Our last Founders Day was celebrated at Oatley Bay back in 2020, just before the very first lockdown for COVID-19 and was well attended by Joeys, Cubs, Scouts and Venturers from 4th Kingsgrove. This year’s celebrations will be held at Kyle Bay – yep, where 1st Kyle Bay Sea Scouts are – which for our Cub parents will be easy after our joint canoeing nights last year.

  • When: Sunday, 26 February 2023
  • Where: 1st Kyle Bay Sea Scouts – 161 Kyle Parade, Connells Point (Donnelly Park which is adjacent to the Scout Hall).
  • Time: 9:45am ready for Opening Parade at 10am. The day will conclude at 3:30pm.
  • Cost: $5.00 for the event. If you would like to order Sausage, Bread and Onion and a Drink, the cost is $10.00 in total – see Operoo for payment details. Please use your child’s surname and Founders Day as a reference when paying.

Wear: Full uniform with scarf required for Opening Parade. Kids can get changed afterwards. For water activities, either boardshorts and a rashie or clothes you can get wet in – water shoes or fully enclosed shoes also required, children will not be allowed to participate in water activities if they are wearing sandals, crocs or thongs.

Bring: On top of clothing and shoes for water activities, please also bring another change of clothes and a towel, as well as a proper hat and ample sunscreen. A jumper if the day is cool and snacks and a water bottle. If you are not ordering lunch prior to the event for your youth member, please bring lunch with you as well.

For water activities, please note that kids will need to be able to swim a minimum distance. Don’t worry if you are unable to do so, or are not comfortable with your child participating in water activities, there will be plenty of other land-based activities to keep us busy and entertained.

Note that only registered youth members and leaders can participate in the water-based activities. Siblings are welcome to come along on the day and watch, and may be able to participate in some activities such as craft, but cannot undertake water activities or some land-based activities as they are not insured. Parents are also welcome to bring some lunch along and join us for a picnic lunch from 12:30pm.

Joeys are welcome to attend and participate but will need a parent or carer to attend with them.

Further information is available in this flyer that Bamboo has kindly put together, along with a map.
